Ashliegh Ritchie

Ashleigh Ritchie is a North Canterbury-based visual artist whose practice has evolved from a foundation in sculpture and intaglio to a deep and personal exploration of portraiture.

A graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Visual Arts at Ara Institute of Canterbury, Ashleigh was awarded the FRIENDS of the Christchurch Art Gallery Scholarship for excellence, which helped shape her early journey into the arts. While her formal studies focused on traditional printmaking and three-dimensional forms, Ashleigh’s current work leans into the emotional depth and quiet storytelling of portraiture. Working primarily in oil on panel, she captures intimate, vibrant portrayals of her loved ones - often her own family, friends, and pets. Her compositions are grounded in realism but infused with a warmth and modern sensibility that reflect her deep connection to her subjects. Inspired by everyday moments, and personal history, Ashleigh’s paintings celebrate the people and relationships that make life meaningful. Her evolving style balances fine detail with painterly texture, often incorporating elements of nature or dreamlike lighting to enhance mood and narrative.

Exhibitions and Awards:

Throughout her high school years at Ashburton College (2008–2011), Ashleigh Ritchie consistently excelled in the arts, earning multiple awards including the Daly Trophy for Excellence in Visual Arts, the Walters Memorial Prize, and Awards of Excellence in both Painting and Photography.

In 2012, she began her Bachelor of Applied Visual Arts at Ara Institute of Canterbury (formerly CPIT), graduating in 2014 with distinction. During her studies, she was awarded the FRIENDS of the Christchurch Art Gallery Scholarship in recognition of her dedication and achievement in the visual arts.

Ashleigh is an active member of Arts Canterbury, the Rangiora Art Society, and the Ashburton Society of Arts. She has exhibited successfully in group shows with all three organisations from 2023 to 2025. Her work is currently on display at Linwood Arts – Eastside Gallery. Recent achievements include Best in Show at the Rangiora Art Society’s 2023 Spring Exhibition, and Best Panel in the 2024 Kaiapoi Art Expo.
