Mel Eaton

Turning everyday objects into artefacts of wonder, exploring value, sentiment and meaning.

Mel Eaton creates work that is equal parts visual illusion and conceptual punchline. Her art practice explores the slippery nature of value - what we treasure, what we discard, and what we see only when we step back and consider the context. Working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, Mel explores hyperrealism and playful scale shifts to draw attention to the overlooked: a helium balloon rendered in paint becomes a monument to fleeting joy; a fruit sticker, enlarged and printed on metal, becomes a nostalgic emblem of childhood ritual; a humble clay brick, painted with trompe l'oeil precision, is recast as an artefact of historic weight.

Mel’s work invites a double take and closer inspection reveals a deeper curiosity about material culture, consumer aesthetics, and the stories we attach to objects. She’s drawn to the absurd, the shiny, and the sentimental, often wrapping big feelings inside glossy surfaces.

Based in North Canterbury, Mel’s practice blends traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary collector’s eye. Her work is grounded in research and rich with humour, always chasing that satisfying moment when wonder and recognition collide.
